The website one red paperclip was created by Kyle MacDonald, a Canadian blogger who bartered his way from a single paperclip to a house in a series of trades spanning just over one year.

MacDonald began with one red paper clip on March 28, 2005. By July 5, 2006, a chain of bartering had ultimately led to trading a movie role for a two-story farmhouse in Kipling, Saskatchewan. On July 7, 2007—just over one year after MacDonald began his experiment—the deed to the house was signed. In the following September, at the housewarming party where 12 of the 14 traders were present, he proposed to his girlfriend and she accepted. The wedding ring was made from the original red paperclip he got back from the first woman to have agreed to trade with him.<sup id=\"cite_ref-ctv_0-0\" class=\"reference\">[1]</sup>
MacDonald got the idea for [I]one red paperclip[/I] from a childhood game called \"Bigger and Better,\" and announced his quest on July 12, 2005 with a post on Craigslist.<sup id=\"cite_ref-ctv_0-1\" class=\"reference\">[1]</sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-1\" class=\"reference\">[2]</sup>
The website was followed online by nearly a thousand people, according to bookmarking data provided by del.icio.us<sup id=\"cite_ref-2\" class=\"reference\">[3]</sup> Several of the trades were covered by news channels like CNN, ABC News<sup id=\"cite_ref-3\" class=\"reference\">[4]</sup>, and the BBC<sup id=\"cite_ref-bbc_4-0\" class=\"reference\">[5]</sup>, among others.
[I]The Hour[/I] on CBC Newsworld in particular followed the trading with some interest, especially when MacDonald remarked that he would not go to Yahk, British Columbia for a trade. The village protested and MacDonald said that [I]The Hour[/I] would have to broadcast a show there before he would make a trade. In February 2006, the show took the challenge and had a special episode shot there which covered MacDonald\'s latest trade.<sup id=\"cite_ref-5\" class=\"reference\">[6]</sup>

It-s one day after the CMA — Canadian Marketing Association — From Mass To Grass — Word Of Mouth Marketing Conference and the presentation from One Red Paperclip guy, Kyle MacDonald, is still replaying itself in my mind\'s eye. It really struck an emotional chord with me. He\'s a very passionate guy and not, necessarily, about marketing. I think people who were following his story were champions during the trades because of the idea (\"some dude, is trying to trade one red paperclip up to a house, yup... let\'s help him\"). That\'s fine, but after listening to him speak, I think Kyle understands marketing better than most of the people in attendance yesterday (this includes me)- and my guess is he doesn\'t even know it.
  Marketing Lessons From The One Red Paperclip Guy — Kyle MacDonald (as translated by me):
  1. If you\'re going to do it, do it with integrity.
  Kyle had many opportunities to sell-out, take advertising or sponsorship and do other things for personal material gain. Instead, he chose to keep the trades alive in the spirit of \"bigger or better\" — the game he played as a child and the idea spark he got when he first saw the one red paperclip on his desk and came up with the initial idea. He could have got greedy fast for money, but he did not.

2. Instead of building something that\'s of benefit to you, try taking your next steps by finding out what other people would be interested in.
  Along the journey from one red paperclip to a house, Kyle could have traded for things that would have benefited him directly. Instead, he focused on trades that would open up the project and community by trading stuff that would be of more value to others in the spirit of meeting more interesting people.
  3. Do it first and let the community help, direct and re-focus/re-fine the idea.
  Kyle sat for one month with the Blog and no traffic or interest. When things started to pick-up, Kyle did not try to control the entire situation, he opened it up and leveraged his Blog to incite conversation, debate and yes, even criticism. His PowerPoint featured slides of comments from his Blog—very funny stuff. Quotes like \"dumbass\" and \"worst trade ever.\"
  4. The idea has to be of interest to the community—even if you are the benefactor
  Let the community have the most fun with the process. If people felt like Kyle was only out for himself in this process, it would have never worked. Kyle really focused on making the trades interesting to the community—not just himself. In the end, Kyle did not get the house, the community did it and allowed him.
  5. Be open.
  Kyle left his mobile number on the Blog from day one and told the From Mass To Grass crowd that he would not accept a trade offer with anyone who didn\'t call him with the offer. All email trades were rejected. The person who wanted to trade should have no trouble calling up and delivering the proposal by voice. I guess things are better heard than read.
  As Marketers, I\'ll let you draw the deep and philosophical lines to how Kyle laid out a simple, pure and believable road map to marketing (and word of mouth) success.
  In the end, the Word of Mouth Marketing Conference made me realize that real word of mouth is not just about digital channels. From lululemon to the World Rock Paper Scissors Society, what is really driving word of mouth is people connecting to people. The digital space has been a magnificent magnifier and connector of this of this (think six pixels of separation), but it\'s just one channel for true word of mouth preeminence. Lululemon has a basic brochure-ware website—they build communities in stores, through events and through causes.
  In the end, people always count. I spent the day, in person, at the From Mass To Grass Word Of Mouth Marketing Conference connecting. I didn\'t sign up to a webcast or read live Blogging. I went. To meet, to network and to grow. Through that channel, I was able to connect to people and spread the word of social media.
  Lots of lessons learned.

Residents of Kipling, Sask. threw a house-warming party on Sunday for Kyle MacDonald, the blogger who managed to trade a red paper clip for one of the town\'s homes over the course of a year.
It was a celebration of a remarkable story, and literally had a Hollywood ending: the award of a movie role to 19-year-old town resident Nolan Hubard.
  \"This has been my dream since I was like 10-years-old,\'\' said Hubard. \"I can\'t stop shaking. I\'m going to pass out.\"
And in a final surprise, MacDonald became reunited with the red paper clip that started it all. He fashioned it into a ring, and in front of a cheering crowd proposed to his long-time girlfriend.
The event was attended by both locals and others who travelled from all over Canada to party with the 26-year-old former Montreal resident.
\"There are literally hundreds of people around. It\'s a good party,\" MacDonald said in an interview with CTV\'s Lindsey Hoemsen, outside his new home on Main Street.
\"It\'s not one of those things you can ever really predict happening and it\'s not going to happen on a continuous basis. It\'s a one shot deal, everyone realizes that and we\'re taking the right approach.\"
  MacDonald\'s quest began July 12, 2005 when he decided to play an on-line version of a swap game he played as a kid.
He put a red paper clip up for trade on his website One Red Paperclip. His first trade was for a fish-shaped pen, which he then swapped for: [LIST]

Bernsen offered MacDonald a role in his new movie, \"Donna On Demand\'\' in exchange for the snow globe (Bernsen apparently being a collector with an impressive snow globe collection).
By this time, the trading had caught the attention of the town of Kipling. Figuring it would be good for economic development, Kipling town council bought a vacant house on Main Street.
  The council offered the home to MacDonald, and he accepted.
  Twelve of the 14 traders came together on Sunday.
\"It will be a first for all of us to finally get to meet each other and see what strange reasons we all came together,\" said Mark Hermann, who traded the snow globe.
  Bernsen himself visited the town (population 1,140) last month to start auditions for his film, \"Donna on Demand.\"
After the three-day party wraps up Sunday night, the next chapter begins for Kyle as he begins to pen a book about the entire experience.
  The book, however, is due at his publisher by mid October.
  \"So I kind of have to be a bit of a hermit and make that happen,\" said MacDonald.

Mr MacDonald originally swapped the pen for a ceramic doorknob, which he in turn traded for a camping stove. [/SIZE]
This was followed by a generator, bartered for an \"instant party package\": an empty beer keg, a neon Budweiser sign and a promise to fill the keg - offered by a man in New York. [/SIZE]
The beer package went to a Montreal DJ, in exchange for a snowmobile. [/SIZE]
Interviewed on Canadian TV, Mr MacDonald was then asked if there was anywhere he would not go to trade the snowmobile. [/SIZE]
He said he was prepared to travel to Yahk, a hamlet in the Canadian Rockies. A snowmobiling magazine offered the trip to Yahk in exchange for the snowmobile. [/SIZE]
This was traded for a white van, which was used to secure a recording contract which in turn led to the offer of free accommodation in Phoenix. [/SIZE]

If you dream of owning your own house, then trading a red paper clip over the internet might not be the obvious way of doing it. [/SIZE] But Canadian Kyle MacDonald has achieved exactly that and will see his new home for the first time on Wednesday. [/SIZE]
It took Kyle exactly a year of 14 internet trades to move from the paper clip to a house on Main Street in the tiny town of Kipling in Saskatchewan province - a place he has never been to before. [/SIZE]
Now the 26-year-old is planning to write a book about the venture which saw him trade up through a novelty doorknob, a camping stove, a snowmobile, a recording contract, and an afternoon with rock star Alice Cooper. [/SIZE]

The doorknob became a camping stove, which turned into a 1,000-watt generator that was swapped for a beer keg, which in turn was traded for a snow mobile. [/SIZE]
The website started to attract a loyal following, with one reader delighted by the trade for a snow mobile prompted to comment: \"Woaa dude, nice trade. If I had something bigger or more pricey I would exchange.\" [/SIZE]

But glee turned to astonished concern when Kyle opted to trade an afternoon with rock star Alice Cooper for a snow globe.  [/SIZE]
One typical comment on the website said: \"Kyle, man, what were you thinking? I personally think this is the craziest thing you have done.\" [/SIZE]
But his fans need not have worried. Hollywood director Corbin Bernsen collects snow globes and wanted it so much that he offered a paid, credited, speaking role in his next film Donna on Demand. [/SIZE]

The same week I traded the instant party for Michel Barrette\'s snowmobile, I was interviewed by George Stroumboulopoulos on The Hour – a national TV program in Canada. George asked me, quite succinctly, if there was anywhere in the world I [I]wouldn\'t[/I] go to make the trade. I responded. “I will go anywhere in the world except for Yahk, British Columbia.”

Then I went home to bed

The next morning the phone rang and tore me from a deep sleep. I answered. “Hello.” “Hello is Kyle there?” I cleared my throat, swallowed and answered. “Yup. That\'s me.” “Hey Kyle, how\'s it going?” “Good. You?” “Great. My name is Jeff Cooper and I work for a magazine in Cranbrook British Columbia called SnoRiders West. We\'re conveniently located forty-five minutes from Yahk.” “Nice! I guess you saw the show last night then?” “Well, I didn\'t, but a co-worker of mine, Kerry, told me all about it.” “Cool.” “Well, we\'ve been throwing some ideas around, and well, we want to make you an offer for your snowmobile.” “Really! That\'s awesome. What\'s your offer?” “We want to offer you a trip to Yahk.” “Really?”

And he meant it. Return airfare for two people from anywhere in North America to Cranbrook, a day of skiing, meals, and of course, a snowmobile trip to Yahk. Jeff wanted me to come along on the trip as well, so that the official trade could be made in Yahk. This was big news: A trip to Yahk. I agreed with Jeff that this was an amazing offer. Jeff took a deep breath and then gave me one more piece of vital information,”But there\'s a catch.” “What\'s that?” “The catch is, you must make the trade in Yahk.”

Ouch. Here Jeff was offering me [I]the[/I] perfect offer for the snowmobile, but I\'d gone and said I wouldn\'t go to Yahk. How could I go to Yahk? I might be a lot of things, but a liar is not one of those things. If I went to Yahk, my credibility would be shot. People might think I wasn\'t serious that I\'d go anywhere on earth to make a trade except Yahk. I was totally serious - Yahk was not an option. It\'s just that, well, I never really expected to actually get a trade offer from anyone in Yahk, it being a small remote community on the other side of the country and all. It wasn\'t like I had anything against Yahk or the citizens of Yahk, it\'s just a lot more fun to say you won\'t go somewhere really obscure, than just go around saying you\'ll go anywhere. Anywhere is boring. Anywhere is cliché. Anywhere is not Yahk. I had to do some crafty maneuvering to get out of this one unscathed. My reputation was at stake here. I thought long and hard, went for a run, did a little soul-searching, and realized there was only one way to accept the offer without being a liar: I had to tell a lie. I accepted the trip to Yahk in exchange for the snowmobile, then went over to the computer and wrote a message to the citizens of Yahk:

On Dec 5th 2005, CBC anchorman and body piercing fanatic, George Stroumboulopoulos put me on the spot on live TV and asked if there was any place I would not go to make a trade. For some strange reason, I told him that I would go anywhere on Earth to make a trade, except Yahk B.C. Don\'t get mad at me for this, get mad at George Stroumboulopoulos. Why? I\'ll let you in on a little secret - I think he hypnotized me. Yes, I think George Stroumboulopoulos hypnotized me on live TV with a double whammy of his extremely long, impossible-to-remember-how-to-spell last name and abundant body-piercings. He forced me to say that I would not go to Yahk to make a trade. I\'ve been to Yahk before. Yahk seems like a very nice place. I\'m sure you\'re a nice person too, it\'s just that George Stroumboulopoulos forced me to announce an official trade embargo with your town. I hope you can live with the stigma of being the only place on Earth I can not go to make a trade. We can still be friends, just not trading partners. Maybe the citizens of Yahk should boycott George Stroumboulopoulos in retaliation for his heavy-handed hypnotic prowess - seems like the most logical thing to me. Actually, I think somebody should start a petition to get George Stroumboulopoulos to do a live broadcast of The Hour on CBC from Yahk to apologize for his evil ways. Yes, if there\'s anybody out there who knows how to organize an on-line petition, can you set it up and forward me the link? Thanks in advance - this is definitely a step in the right direction.

Twenty minutes later, I got an email from Brent who set up an on-line petition:

live from Yahk when Kyle MacDonald of www.oneredpaperclip.com will be present to \"not to make a trade.\" If George Stroumboulopoulos makes the broadcast from Yahk, the hypnotic spell he placed on Kyle MacDonald on live TV will be reversed and future trades for the one red paperclip project will finally be allowed to take place in Yahk. I posted a link to the petition on the website. By the time I went to bed there were already a few signatures, some even from people I\'d never met. By the next day even more people had put their name on the petition. I started thinking to myself, maybe this might actually work. Anything is possible, right?

The controversy caused quite a stir in Yahk. Penny AP Anderson from the Yahk-Kingsgate historical society, and a self-described [I]Yahk[/I]tivist, posted the petition on the Yahk-Kingsgate community website and warned George Stroumboulopoulos that his hypnotic powers would have no effect on the citizens of Yahk. Penny sent me an email: [I]\"Keep watching... someone picked the right community!\"[/I] I forwarded all of the goings on to Claire, a producer for The Hour. She fired an email back right away: [I]To: \"kyle macdonald\" Subject: Re: George\'ll wanta see this >>make sure you watch the show tonight![/I]

Dom and I didn\'t have cable so we went over to her sister\'s place and commandeered the TV. I was pretty nervous about what was going to happen. George came on the show and described his situation to the nation. He explained how I\'d accused him of hypnotizing me - an obvious lie, I didn\'t accuse him of lying, everyone knew it was true, him with his hypnotic powers and all. He said that he was caught in the middle of “some sort of bizarro love triangle” between me and the petition and the citizens of Yahk. George said that he and everyone at The Hour would watch the petition and see how it went. George also added, “Unlike Kyle, I would definitely like to spend some time in Yahk, British Columbia.”

This made me nervous. I totally expected to get shot down. If George shot down the idea, at least we\'d know George had a malicious vendetta against all citizens of Yahk and I\'d look like a hero. Now I had to wait and see how the petition went. I hate waiting. Like Tom Petty said, the waiting is the hardest part.

I took some time off from the project at Christmas. When I returned, the petition had more than 1000 signatures. Not too shabby for a petition based on an outrageous accusation and an unlikely-to-come-true scenario. Not bad at all. But it didn\'t really matter if The Hour came to Yahk or not. I was going to Yahk anyhow. I could pull it off without being a liar – there was a loophole. You see, Jeff Cooper sent me some photos of Yahk and I\'d discovered a technicality. There was a sign from Yahk that read:

I figured that since Yahk wasn\'t incorporated as a city or town or village or hamlet pretty much opened up a giant grey area as to where Yahk actually begins and ends. I could theoretically say that I’m in Yahk right now, and so can you. Yahk is everywhere and nowhere at once, so I was free to go there because it doesn\'t really exist. Admittedly, an easy way out, but nevertheless, a loophole. I thought about my loophole proudly. It\'s not everyday you discover a loophole. There was a way to go to Yahk after all. But really, I wanted to coerce George Stroumboulopoulos and The Hour to go to Yahk. Loopholes are fun, but not nearly as fun as national newscasts being forced to travel across countries as the result of petitions based on lies. Stuff like that is way more fun than a loophole, any day of the week.

The signatures continued to roll in for the petition. A few days later I got an email from Claire at The Hour. I opened it with hope in my eyes. Claire had big news, they\'d followed the petition\'s progress and had made a decision: The trip to Yahk was on. This was huge. The Hour was going to do a show live from Yahk. They were going to cover the trades. [I]Yahk[/I]tivism worked. I was more than excited. I fired off a blog post to tell everyone to book off their calendars for the first week of February. The Hour was going to Yahk. Everything was in place – a live national broadcast to cover the trade in Yahk! There was only one problem: I still had to find a way to get the snowmobile to Yahk.
